Hebrews 11:1-3
11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Galatians 2:16
"Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified."
Hebrews 6:4-6
"For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt."
James 2:14-26
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good[a] is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
1 John 5:13-21
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God[a] will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Sin that Leads to Death
What does it mean that a sin leads to death. The scripture seems to be alarming, so I wanted to elaborate now about this verse for those who are curious. There are ideas of mortal sins, loss of salvation, apostasy, and Christians loosing their salvation. We spent some time on those verses above to solidify our view of Sola Fide.
There is a verse that helps here:
Matthew 12:31
31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
Blapshemy against the Holy Spirit the complete and final rejection of the Holy Spirit. In other words I have died in my sin and have spurned the calling of the Holy Spirit and hardened their heart towards God. This person has never repented and never will repent, as one who commits this sin cannot repent of it.
There are two reasons to me one cannot repent of the blashemy of the Holy Spirit. You have committed this sin that leads to death, I literally died without repenting or I committed a sin that lead to my death. I have died without the forgiveness of God.
These people did not just take their own life, they were unrepentant in their sin and died from their sin. Thus, these verses are not about a Christian but a non-Christian who has passed the threshold of death and can no longer be redeemed.
